Service Description

Never tried coding before? Want to see and experience how music can be made with coding kits like the BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi? Excited to code in a group of fun, engaging tutors who "get you"? Code Club Sanderlings Drop-In Sessions is the home-schooling pathway of the Southend Music STEAM Tech Clubs, built for children aged 8 to 11 who learn outside the traditional classroom and whose parents want a genuine, deep learning experience in a project based session. At the centre of everything we do is Creative Music Tech Coding that challenges and inspires. We use the language of music — rhythm, pattern, cause and effect, listening, composing — as the on-ramp into computational thinking. A child who has never written a line of code in their life can, within a single session, understand why a loop repeats, why a sequence matters, and why a small change at the start changes everything at the end — because they've just watched, and heard, it happen in a piece of music they built themselves, on devices like the BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi. This isn't decoration — it's deliberate pedagogy. Music gives abstract coding concepts a body, a sound, and a feeling, which is exactly what many 8 to 11 year olds — particularly the sensory, hands-on, non-linear thinkers who make up a large part of our home-schooling community — need for a concept to truly land. 📈 Learning Milestones and Objectives 💠 Give every child a genuine first experience of coding through music, sound, and rhythm — no prior experience needed 💠 Exercise core computational-thinking muscles: sequencing, prediction, calm debugging, pattern recognition 💠 Practise decision-making under uncertainty in a low-pressure, drop-in format 💠 Build comfort and familiarity with the BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi in a hands-on, sensory way Main Learning Outcomes 💠 A child who understands why a loop repeats, why a sequence matters, and why small changes have big effects 💠 A calmer, more confident relationship with mistakes — learning to debug code (and their own thinking) without panic or shame 💠 A self-directed, resilient thinker who is a little more comfortable making decisions and a little more patient with errors 👉🏼 Top Skills Acquired 💠 Foundations of code language terms and usual terminology 💠 Sequencing and pattern recognition through music-led coding 💠 Calm, confident debugging — finding and fixing mistakes without frustration 💠 Cause-and-effect thinking
